Why Metal Roofing Is a Smart Investment

Metal roofs were typically used only for industrial buildings or farm sheds in the past. The outstanding durability and excellent ability to withstand weather and provide heat problems made metal roofs a popular choice for modern Australian homes. Whereas tile roofs can crack or dislodge over time, metal roofs should retain their structure to provide roofing for several decades, resisting harsh weather without any issues.

Metal roofs offer robust protection in parts of NSW where bushfires, strong winds, and salt-laden coastal air can damage standard types of roofing materials. Additionally, a metal roof is lighter than tile and puts less stress on the structure of your home, yet it provides long-lasting protection. Moreover, the majority of metal roofing systems are recyclable; therefore, they are a green choice for property owners who prioritize sustainability.

COLORBOND® Steel – The All-Rounder for Australian Homes

Probably the most famous and widely used roofing material in Australia, especially in Sydney suburbs, COLORBOND® steel was designed with Australia in mind, featuring a strong paint finish baked on and a corrosion-resistant core. Modern look, excellent performance for both heritage and new homes.

The colour range is one of the strongest factors about COLORBOND. It comes in over 20 architecturally inspired shades, suitable for a wide range of building styles and environments. Being coated with Thermatech solar reflectance technology enhances its ability to reflect higher sun heat and thus keep interior temperatures down. Hence, homeowners who seek comfort, energy efficiency, and aesthetics will adore COLORBOND.

At Action Roofing, we often recommend COLORBOND to clients seeking a contemporary yet sturdy roofing material with a comprehensive warranty. It does not chip, crack, or peel, thus ensuring its performance and looks year after year.

Zincalume® Steel – Affordable and Resilient

Zincalume® steel is made from zinc, aluminium, and silicon. It offers excellent corrosion resistance and strength at a price lower than COLORBOND. The silvery finish gives the steel a clean look, very much in tune with minimalist or industrial-style homes.

Although it is not available in dozens of colours like COLORBOND, the essence of Zincalume remains its simplicity. Several country dwellers and commercial buildings opt for Zincalume as their solution, which offers a good balance between cost and performance. It is built to last, often outperforming traditional galvanised steel in terms of longevity and weather resistance.

Where cheap housing is required, particularly when the roofing is not visible or does not require a colour finish, Zincalume would perform excellently under these conditions. It will also be a great option when quality must be maintained during the re-roofing of any building with a tight budget.

Galvanised Steel – Traditional and Trusted

Initially, zinc provided waterborne resistance to prevent the corrosion of the steel. With the introduction of rust-resistant COLORBOND and Zincalume steel coatings, it took on a whole new meaning in the parlance of metal roofing. However, it provides good protection and strength but requires higher maintenance overheads, especially in coastal areas or regions with high rainfall.

However, despite the better long-term performance of newer alternatives, it is still in use for rural buildings, sheds, and specific industrial sites where aesthetics are not a priority. It provides the classic Australian zinc roof look, which may offer a competitive price for large-scale jobs.

For houses in high-saline exposure areas, such as the Northern Beaches or Central Coast of NSW, Action Roofing recommends considering more corrosion-resistant types of COLORBOND Ultra or aluminium to prevent future degradation.

Aluminium Roofing – Ideal for Coastal Properties

Aluminium is one of the premium choices for roofing, best known for being corrosion-resistant and lightweight, which makes it a good selection in coastal areas, where salt spray quickly spoils other materials. Aluminium can stay rustproof because, in nature, it forms an oxide layer that protects it from further oxidation whenever scratched or cut.

Weight is another excellent advantage of aluminium. It is significantly lighter than steel, placing minimal structural loads on buildings. This can be particularly useful for older homes or those with limited structural reinforcement. Aluminium is also highly ductile, a quality that works well in curved or architecturally unique roof designs.

The initial cost of aluminium is higher than that of Zincalume or galvanised steel. Still, aluminium roofing is worth it due to its longer lifespan, design, low maintenance requirements, and suitability for the coastal climate of New South Wales. Aluminium roofing gives you peace of mind when it comes to protecting your home near Wollongong, Newcastle, or anywhere along the shoreline.

Copper Roofing – The Premium Choice with Timeless Appeal

Copper falls in a class of its own when it comes to roofing. It promises excellent longevity, which, in this case, translates to over 100 years of service in a given area. The green patina develops naturally on the metal’s surface. This patina makes it look charming while also adding a layer of protection against corrosion.

In all fairness, it is placed in the luxury category, where copper finds its place in respectable houses, historic restorations, or commercial buildings, where a strong visual statement is intended to be made. Whilst upfront costs for this metal type offer the highest figure in comparison to all other metal roofs, this is thus counterbalanced by the low maintenance cost and maximum lifespan of copper roofs.

We at Action Roofing recommend a copper roof to those who want to truly place value on and beautify their property and invest in a roofing solution that may never require replacement during their lifetime.

Standing Seam Metal Roofing – Sleek and Contemporary

Standing seam roofing is a modern system that has long metal panels joined together with raised seams. The seams, also known as ribs, are raised above the flat plane of the panels, allowing water to flow away from the joints. Architectural installations and modern home designs often prefer this clean, minimalist styling.

Unlike other styles of metal roof systems, it utilises concealed fasteners, so fewer screws are exposed to potential leaks or rust. They become a product of choice for any property seeking a sleek, minimalist look coupled with truly exceptional waterproofing performance.

This kind of roofing can accommodate solar panels. What metals can it be made of? COLORBOND, aluminium, zinc, etc. These options rank highly among architecturally discerning clients who equally want function and flair.

Which Type of Metal Roof Is Right for You?

Generally, choosing among metal roofing types depends on location, budget, aesthetics, and long-term goals. Locals in bushfires or coastal areas tend to find COLORBOND Ultra or aluminium the most suitable materials. The more economical features of Zincalume do not compromise its fine performance. If the desire is for a highly stylish and contemporary look, copper or standing seam does the trick.

At Action, we take the time to judge each property on its merit. We consider the property’s orientation, the elements it is exposed to, and its architectural style before recommending a metal roof solution that genuinely adds value to your home—not merely an aesthetic issue but something that will deliver an adequate measure of performance and savings as it matures.

Maintenance and Longevity of Metal Roofing

One of the most significant selling points in metal roofs is that they rarely need maintenance. The tile roofs are more temperamental and will shift out of place over time or sometimes crack. Acting on little maintenance can improve and encourage the lifetime of the roof. Below are some steps you can take to extend the life of your metal roof and ensure it retains its value throughout the year.

At Action Roofing, we recommend having your roof inspected by a professional every two years. This will enable the detection of minor issues before the repair procedure. Clean the gutters of your metal roof, clear the roof surface of debris, and inspect any loose fasteners. This is how you can properly maintain your metal roof.

Alternatively, for greater peace of mind, an annual maintenance package is available, along with prompt response in the event of storm or weather-related damage. All installations carry a two-year workmanship warranty in addition to the manufacturer’s material guarantee.

Action Roofing was recommended by a local carpenter. Michael said I would be really happy with them - and I was. Michael knew one of the owners for many years. All the dealings I had with Paul and Peter (the owners) and subsequently Ben and Kyle, who did the actual roofing repairs, were excellent. There were plenty of photos provided (I asked for them) and Ben explained what they did, and also educated me on what makes a good job and why. More research on my part confirmed that Ben and earlier Paul, were not talking "through their hat". The repairs/maintenance were not cheap but the care Ben and Kyle showed in their work was obvious. I wanted a good job with no shortcuts. Earlier at the time Paul assessed my roof, after questioning, Paul indicated that if I wanted shortcuts, then I would have to get another roofer. Overall, very happy customer.

Peter is one of the rare tradies that is honest and accurate about what needs fixing on a job and hence doesn’t charge an arm and a leg.
We use Peter for all of our roofing jobs and I would’t risk giving a job to anyone else. He is quick to pin point the issue and his pricing is fair. I once had an owners insurance builders return 5 times to a property without fixing the issue. I asked the owner if we could send Peter which I did and the job was completed first go.

I am the Maintenance manager at a Retirement and aged care village on the Northern Beaches (Allambie Heights) and we have had the pleasure of having Action Roofing do
considerable repairs, alterations and maintenance on our many 1970 era, eves and gutters. The service was excellent, the staff very skilled ,polite efficient and clean and tidy. The Owner Peter Portelli was so very competent in all aspects. Technically the best I've been associated with. He was in high demand especially during weather incidents and even then never failed to turn up for appoints , quotes or actual work to be done. When Peter gave his assurances on a job I knew it would be done to the highest standard.
I cannot but give him references of the highest quality
